How to Calculate the Age Difference Between Two People

Working out the age gap between two people sounds trivial — subtract one birth year from the other and stop. In practice that gives you the right answer for half of every year and the wrong answer for the other half.
Doing it properly is the same problem as calculating any single age, only run twice and then differenced. Here is how it works, and the small surprises that come out the other side.
The right way to do it
Three steps:
1. Calculate person A's age in years, months and days as of today
2. Calculate person B's age in years, months and days as of today
3. Subtract one from the other
The advantage of this approach is that the answer doesn't change as time passes. The age difference between two people is a fixed quantity — it was the same the day they were born and it will be the same the day they die. The naive "current year minus their birth year" trick gives a number that flickers between two values depending on whose birthday has happened most recently.
Worked example
Person A: born 12 March 1985.
Person B: born 28 September 1989.
The gap is 4 years, 6 months and 16 days. That figure stays exactly the same on every date for the rest of both their lives. Today, ten years from now, fifty years from now: 4 years, 6 months and 16 days.
Compare that to the naive year-only calculation. Sometimes it gives 4, sometimes it gives 5, depending on whether person B's birthday has come round yet that year. Both numbers are technically correct in some sense, but neither is the actual gap.
Where age gaps get interesting
A few categories of age difference come up most often:
Siblings
Sibling gaps are usually known to the day in the family. An age-difference tool is mostly useful for the surprisingly common edge case of half-siblings, step-siblings or cousins where nobody has bothered to do the maths.
Couples
Gaps between partners are one of the most-Googled categories of age difference. There is no scientific cut-off for "too big" or "too small" — it is a personal and cultural question. An accurate age difference calculator just gives you the number, in years and months and days.
Generations
Age gaps in generations (parent to child, grandparent to grandchild) are interesting because they implicitly tell you something about reproductive timing in a family. A 50-year gap between grandparent and grandchild implies one set of generations averaged around 25 years; a 70-year gap implies later parenthood at every step.
Public figures
A perennial curiosity. The exact gap between two famous people, particularly when they are romantically linked or paired professionally, drives a noticeable share of "compare ages" searches. The maths is the same; only the inputs are different.
Why the gap is constant
This is worth a moment because it surprises people. Both people age at the same rate — one second per second. Subtracting one age from the other always gives the same difference, regardless of when you measure.
The only thing that changes over time is the *ratio* of their ages. A 4-year gap between a 4-year-old and an 8-year-old feels enormous (one is twice the other's age). The same gap between a 40-year-old and a 44-year-old is almost invisible. The arithmetic is identical; the perception is wildly different.
Things a good calculator handles
Time zones. A person born in Tokyo and a person born in Toronto have a real birth instant that often falls on different calendar dates. Comparing only their local dates can mislead by up to a day. A reliable comparison normalises both birth instants to a single time zone before subtracting.
Leap years. If one person was born on 29 February, the comparison still works, but the anchor used for "next birthday" needs to be defined. The Compare Ages tool on this site uses the European convention (28 February in non-leap years).
Hours, minutes and seconds. If both birth times are known precisely, the gap can be expressed all the way down to the second — a level of precision that occasionally matters for twins or near-twins, and is otherwise more curiosity than necessity.
