The 10 Age Milestones Everyone Hits and When You'll Reach Yours
Jessica David · 23 March 2026
Most birthdays are decided by the calendar. You turn 18, 21, 30, 50 because the year flips over. The numbers are familiar, the cards are pre-printed, and almost everybody you know hits them in roughly the same order.
A different kind of birthday is hiding underneath. Birthdays measured in days, weeks, hours or seconds — the round numbers that the calendar quietly skips. Most people pass them without noticing.
Here are ten of the best.
1. 1,000 days alive
Reached just before your third birthday. It happens around age 2 years, 8 months and 27 days. By the time anyone could meaningfully celebrate this one, the person celebrating has no memory of it.
2. 10,000 days alive
This one lands at roughly 27 years and 4 months. It is one of the most popular self-tracked milestones in the world. Ten thousand sunrises is a clean, round number that feels like an honest summary of an early adult life.
3. 1,000 weeks alive
Hits at roughly 19 years and 2 months. It is loosely the threshold of legal adulthood across most of the world, and it lands close enough to most people's first big "leaving home" moment to feel symbolic.
4. 4,000 weeks alive (the Burkeman number)
Oliver Burkeman's 2021 book *Four Thousand Weeks* takes its title from this idea: a typical 80-year human life contains roughly 4,000 weeks. You hit this number at about 76 years and 8 months. For most readers, the more useful exercise is calculating where in those 4,000 weeks you currently are.
5. 1 million minutes alive
You reach a million minutes at almost exactly 1 year, 11 months and one week. It happens in toddlerhood, so again, no candles. But it is a small reminder that the early years contain enormous amounts of measurable time.
6. 1 million hours? (You won't)
A million hours is 114 years. So far, only a tiny number of supercentenarians have plausibly reached it. For most readers, this milestone exists mainly as a reminder that hours add up much faster than they feel.
7. 1 billion seconds alive
Lands at roughly 31 years, 8 months and 8 days. This is the headline second-level milestone — see our dedicated post on it — and the only "billion" in life that almost everyone reaches.
8. Your halfway point
For a healthy adult in a developed country, statistical life expectancy is around 80 years. The halfway point is therefore around your 40th birthday. Halfway points are inherently approximate (they depend heavily on country, health, sex and lifestyle), but they are a useful prompt to think about the second half of a life, not just the first.
9. The retirement age in your country
Most countries set the state pension age between 60 and 67. The exact number depends where you live and when you were born; rules are gradually shifting upward almost everywhere. Find your country's rules and calculate the exact date — most people are surprised by how specific it can be.
10. The 100,000-hours-of-sleep milestone
If you sleep an average of 7.5 hours a night, you cross 100,000 hours of sleep at around your 36th birthday. Sleep is the single largest activity in any life and yet almost the only one nobody marks as a milestone. We have an article on time spent asleep that goes into the maths in more detail.
How to find the exact date for each one
Every milestone above can be calculated precisely from your birth instant. The only inputs needed are date, time and time zone of birth. From there it is straightforward arithmetic — adding the right number of seconds, days or weeks, and respecting the calendar's awkward shape. The milestones tool does all of this in your browser without sending your birthday anywhere.
The milestones above are not a checklist or a target. They are a way of looking at the same life through a different unit. The number of days you have been alive is a different kind of fact than the number of birthdays you have had — and one is no truer than the other. For the headline gigasecond birthday in particular, see what 1 billion seconds is in years; for why the day count alone is worth tracking, read how many days old am I.
