What Happens to Your Birthday Every 4 Years? The Leap Year Effect

About one in every 1,461 people is born on 29 February. For everybody else, leap years are a barely-noticed extra day. For the leaplings — sometimes called leapers, leapsters or 29ers — the date raises a strange annual question. If your birthday only exists every four years, when do you actually celebrate it?
Why leap years exist at all
The Earth takes roughly 365.2422 days to go around the Sun. A 365-day calendar drifts about a quarter of a day every year. Without correction, the calendar slowly slides out of step with the seasons.
The Julian calendar, introduced in 45 BCE, fixed this with a simple rule: add one extra day every four years. That overcorrects slightly, so the Gregorian calendar (1582) refined the rule:
- A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4
- Except if it is divisible by 100, when it is not a leap year
- Except again if it is divisible by 400, when it is a leap year
So 1900 was not a leap year, but 2000 was. The next century year that will not be a leap year is 2100.
What that does to your birthday
In a leap year, your birthday lands neatly on 29 February. In the other three years, your calendar has no such date. You have a few options.
The 28 February convention
In the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, New Zealand and most of Europe, the legal convention is that a person born on 29 February reaches their next age on 28 February in non-leap years. So someone born on 29 February 2000 turns 18 on 28 February 2018, not 1 March 2018.
The 1 March convention
In the United States, parts of Canada and several other countries, the convention is the opposite: the birthday rolls over to 1 March in non-leap years. The age changes one day later.
The "real" birthday
Many leaplings split the difference culturally — celebrating 28 February at midnight and into 1 March, treating both days as a kind of double-birthday. A few wait the full four years and have one big party in their "real" birthday year.
How age calculators handle it
Most modern age calculators pick a convention and stick to it. The maths is otherwise the same as any other birthday: count whole years from the birth year to the current year, then check whether the anchor date has been reached yet.
The only special case is what happens between 28 February and 1 March in a non-leap year. A calculator that follows the European convention will tick the age over at midnight on 28 February. One that follows the American convention waits another 24 hours.
Either is defensible. What matters is that the rule is applied consistently — flipping conventions partway through someone's life would create contradictory legal records.
Are leaplings really younger?
A common joke is that leaplings have only had a "real" birthday every four years, so a 40-year-old has only had ten of them and is therefore really only ten years old. It is a charming framing, but it is not how age works. Age counts the time you have been alive, not the number of times the calendar has shown your exact birth date.
A 40-year-old leapling has been alive for the same 14,610 days as anybody else born around the same time. Their cake just visits on different dates. If you want to know exactly where the calendar puts you today, check your live age.

A handful of cultural traditions even attach leap-year folklore to the date — in Ireland, 29 February is sometimes called Bachelor's Day, the one day a woman was traditionally allowed to propose marriage.
